WITS UNIVERSITY MASTERS AND PHD SCHOLARSHIPS

Deadline: 30 April 2021

The African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) has partnered with the DAAD German Government scholarship program to provide scholarships for 4 masters and 5 phd candidates to study the Migration and Displacement program at ACMS in the University of the Witwatersrand School of Social Science.

The MA in Migration and Displacement encompasses public health, political science, sociology, urban planning, development studies and other disciplines. With migration being an important and hotly debated topic worldwide, the study of migration has wide-ranging academic and practical applications. Graduate students are equipped with a comprehensive conceptual framework and the practical skills necessary to understand, analyse and advise on the drivers, impacts and management of migration within academia, government and the NGO world.

The PhD in Migration and Displacement is suitable for those who intend to have a career in research either inside or outside the academy. The degree generally requires no coursework. Successful doctoral applicants must have a strong undergraduate degree and Masters qualification; a substantive background in a migration-related field; and a demonstrated ability to conduct methodologically sound, independent research (academic or otherwise). Strong students who do not meet all of these qualifications may be admitted on the condition that they register for a research methods course and/or the core courses of the Master programme, or complete a Masters degree through the programme. Full-time students have two years -and part-time students four years - to complete the degree.

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of a Sub-Saharan African country, excluding South Africa

  • Must have completed your degree not more than 6 years ago by the time of applying

  • MA applicants must have an honors degree with at least 65%

  • PHD applicants must have an MA with at least 70%

  • You must be accepted into the ACMS program

Applicants must include the following in their applications: complete CV, cover letter, copies of transcripts and degree certificates, SAQA evaluation, research proposal, writing sample and proof of admission. Applications must be emailed to naledi.mazibuko1@wits.ac.za by 30 April 2021.
