Schlumberger Foundation Faculty of the Future PHD Program

The Schlumberger Foundation is committed to gender parity in science and recognizes that full access to and participation in a STEM curriculum is essential for the empowerment of women and girls. By facilitating STEM research for women scientists in emerging economies, scientific and technological advances will be enhanced in the local communities and regions from where selected candidates are awarded for this program.


The Faculty for the Future program, launched in 2004, awards fellowships to women from developing and emerging economies to pursue PhD or Post-doctoral research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields at leading universities worldwide.


Candidates should have applied to, have been admitted to, or be currently enrolled in a university abroad when submitting their grant application. Candidates must hold an excellent academic record, demonstrate leadership skills, community outreach activities and have a track record in encouraging girls and women into STEM fields. Candidates should also prove their commitment to return to their home countries upon completion of their studies to contribute to the economic, social and technological advancement of their home regions by strengthening the STEM teaching and research faculties of their home institutions as well as through their leadership in science-based entrepreneurship.


They are also expected to contribute to the public sector where their newly acquired technical and scientific skills can help provide evidence-based support for STEM policy making, including topics of gender representation.


BENEFITS

Since its launch in 2004, 807 women from 86 countries have received Faculty for the Future fellowships to pursue PhD and Post-doctoral research in STEM in leading universities and research institutes outside of their home country. Faculty for the Future grants are based on actual costs for eligible expenses (e.g. tuition, bench fees, accommodation, a living allowance, books and supplies, child care, transport costs, medical insurance, visa costs, conference costs) up to a maximum of USD 50,000 per year for a PhD and maximum of USD 40,000 per year for a Postdoc and may be renewed through to completion of studies. Renewal grants are subject to performance, recommendations from supervisors and strong evidence of reintegration plans in the home country.


At the discretion of the Schlumberger Foundation, an exceptional child care grant may be awarded (per eligible child) to a grantee where the following conditions are met:

  • the child/children is not older than 15 years of age (proof of age may be required);

  • the child/children permanently reside in the same household as the grantee in the host country; and the grantee provides proof of reasonable and documented child-care costs. (All day-care expenses must be supported by a formal letter from the day-care centre, including the name of the child and an estimate of monthly charges).

  • The Foundation may award up to a maximum of 3,000 USD per annum/per child under 6 years of age, and up to a maximum of 1,500 USD per annum/per child from 6 years of age to 15 years of age.


A grantee will not be entitled to receive an exceptional child credit for any child who has reached 16 years of age. The total child care grant shall not exceed 10,000 USD per grantee in any grant year.



ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

The applications website will receive new applications from September 5th to November 11th, 2022 for the 2023-2024 Faculty for the Future Fellowships. To be eligible to apply for this Fellowship applicants must meet the following criteria: You:

  • are a female and are a citizen of a developing country or emerging economy where women are underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines

  • are preparing for a PhD degree or post-doctoral research in a STEM discipline

  • are enrolled, admitted or have applied to a host university/research institute abroad

  • hold an excellent academic record;

  • are willing to go back to your home country or region upon completion of your studies to contribute to its socio-economic development;

  • have a proven record of teaching experience in your home country and can demonstrate your commitment to going back home to: i) an academic or research position in a STEM faculty; ii) and/or to using your knowledge to become a STEM entrepreneur to help resolve regional challenges in your local community/region; iii) and/or to demonstrating leadership by contributing to the public sector using your scientific skills to help provide evidence-based support for STEM policy making, including topics of gender representation; Schlumberger-Private - can demonstrate leadership skills, active community outreach and have a track record in encouraging girls and women into STEM.


HOW TO APPLY

The on-line system will be receiving NEW APPLICATIONS from September 5th, 2022. General tips to help you:

  • Make sure you meet the eligibility criteria and the application deadline;

  • Plan ahead! Producing a good quality application takes time and final selection is based in part on the standard of your application and accompanying materials;

  • Have a clear strategy. Make sure all parts of your application form an integrated whole. Your application should highlight aspects about you and your career that will give the reviewer a focused yet well-rounded view of your candidature;

  • Read and follow the instructions carefully. The instructions are your guide to producing a comprehensive and competitive application;

  • Information regarding available funding from other sources (fellowships, scholarships, sponsorships…) should also be provided.


A successful application will have gone through four selection rounds, with the reviewers paying particular attention to the following criteria:

  • Academic performance;

  • Quality of references;

  • Quality of host country university;

  • Level of commitment to return to home country;

  • Commitment to teaching, STEM entrepreneurship or policy making;

  • Relevance of research to home country;

  • Commitment to inspiring girls and women into STEM.
