MECHATRONICS ENGINEERING SCHOLARSHIP AT ASHESI UNIVERSITY

DEADLINE: 31 July 2024

Ashesi University and ETH Zurich, together with industry and supporting partners, have launched a new Master’s programme in Mechatronic Engineering that will be taught in Ghana by faculty of both universities. The programme, which officially starts classes in January of 2022, is now accepting applications.

ETH Zurich – or the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich – is one of the world’s highest-ranked universities. It has educated over 20 Nobel Prize Laureates, including modern physics pioneer and the inventor of the general theory of relativity Albert Einstein.

Students who graduate from the programme will receive both a Master of Science degree in Engineering from Ashesi and a Master of Advanced Studies degree from ETH Zurich. Students will also be guided by experts from academia and industry whose teaching and training are informed by world-class research and expertise. Industry partners will also be helping provide scholarships, internships and research projects to students.

In 2021, Ashesi was named among the world’s top 400 most impactful universities by the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. The university is considered one of the best in Africa with highly sought after graduates, with an average of 94% receiving career placement offers or starting businesses within six months of completion.

Programme Highlights

  • Fully Funded Educational Programme: Full scholarships covering tuition, academic fees, laptop & equipment, accommodation, health insurance, one trip home each year, monthly stipend for other living expenses

  • Mentorship: Personal career development, supported by professional experts and guided by an experienced mentor

  • Internship: Challenging hands-on assignments in learning by doing

  • Job Offer: Our global-leading industry partners and other companies in the region provide job opportunities after graduation

  • Three-Year Programme with Two Certificates: Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) from ETH Zurich and Master of Science (MSc) from Ashesi University

About Mechatronics Engineering

Mechatronic engineering harnesses the power of mechanics, electrical systems and software to create computer-controlled 'smart' machines. It underpins the technology behind robotics and autonomous systems, automated manufacturing and 'intelligent' microprocessor-based technologies.

Mechatronics engineers work in diverse industries, including product design and development, mining, biotechnology, manufacturing, traditional and non-traditional automation, computer system and software design, transportation, power systems and defence. They hold diverse roles including robotics and automation engineer, software product development consultant, automotive manufacturer, or a process monitoring and plant systems engineer, among many other career options.

MASTERS PROGRAM

The deadline to apply to the Masters in Mechatronic Engineering postgraduate program is June 2023.

The programme integrates knowledge of core areas in automation and production engineering with mathematics, physics, and numerical methods to develop a better understanding of mechatronics applications in a wide range of industry sectors. Selected modules from humanities, social and political sciences, economics and management will also help deepen student understanding of the broad interdependencies between engineering and their social context. Together with our industry partners, students will also be a part of a programme designed to ensure relevance to the industrial development of Sub-Saharan Africa.

The entry requirements for the masters program are:

  1. Applicants with a bachelor or master degree (second class or higher) in mechatronics, mechanical, electrical, computer, allied engineering, or other related degrees will be considered for the programme.

  2. Applicants with aforementioned degrees awarded beyond five years as at the time of their application can also apply, if they can show evidence of consistent on-the-job professional development.

  3. Official Transcript: Transcripts should give detailed information of the individual grades received in university-level qualifications to date. Please upload official documents issued by your institution. Transcripts not in English should be accompanied by a certified translation.

  4. CV/Résumé: Please upload a document of one to three pages highlighting your academic achievements and any relevant professional experience.

  5. Motivation Letter: Statements of motivation should explain your motivation for applying for the programme, your relevant experience and education, and the specific areas that interest you and/or you intend to specialise in.

  6. References: Please provide contact details of two references, at least one academic, who will support your intellectual ability, academic achievement, motivation and interest in the programme and the subject area, and your ability to work effectively in a group and independently.

Interview

Interviews will be held as part of the admissions process. Invited applicants will be given sufficient time to prepare for the interview. At the interview, applicants will be asked specific questions on designated subjects to facilitate wider discussion, and to allow applicants to display their experience and problem-solving skills. Applicant's intellectual ability, academic achievement, leadership potential and motivation will also be assessed. Interviews will take place virtually, with video preferred.

The application fee for this programme is $50 for International Students.

ASHESI SCHOLARSHIP

For undergraduate students, applicants who qualify to enter Ashesi, and apply for scholarships, are then evaluated on the basis of their financial need. Based on the proven financial need, applicants are placed into one of four categories: Extreme Need, High Need, Medium Need or Low Need. For each category of aid, there is a set amount of funding Ashesi can award, or a set amount of named scholarships assigned. Students in each category are then ranked based on the strength of their admissions application; funding is awarded to students in each category based on this ranking, until the allocated funds run out for the admissions period. Applicants who are awarded scholarships will be informed of the conditions of their scholarship, in their admissions package.

For masters in mechatronics students, a number of external organisations have collaborated with Ashesi to provide full and partial scholarships to admitted students who need it. Please indicate on the application portal if you would like to be considered for any of the available funding opportunities, and provide the required supporting documents.
