2026 TESIECS Academic Mobility Scholarship

TESIECS is a consortium made up of University of Johannesburg, University of Western Cape, University of Zimbabwe, University of Botswana, Namibia University of Science and Technology and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Technical Partner) to enhance Intra-Africa Mobilities with a focus on Climate change and Innovative Environmental Solutions. 


Co-funded by the European Union, TESIECS Intra Africa mobility facilitates degree seeking, credit seeking student academic mobilities, short term staff mobilities and traineeships among its African partner institutions to promote creative, locally contextual solutions to climate and environmental challenges.


The project is designed to facilitate capacity enhancement of academic, administrative and technical staff, train cohorts of Masters and PhD postgraduate students to be environmental thought leaders and sustainability champions and place eligible students in traineeships, providing them with climate change related skills. 


ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

  • University of Johannesburg: MA in Social Impact Assessment, Doctorate in Development Studies 

  • University of Western Cape: MA in Women's and Gender Studies MA in Development Studies, PhD in Women's and Gender Studies, PhD in Development Studies  

  • University of Zimbabwe:MSc in Sustainable Urban Planning and Development, MSc in Smart Settlements Designs and Amenities, DPhil in Climate Change and Development 

  • University of Botswana: Masters in Development Practice, MA in Development Studies, PhD in Sociology 

  • Namibia University of Science and Technology: Master of Natural Resource Management


Short-term Credit seeking Programs

  • University of Johannesburg: Advanced Social Research Methodology - 5 months 

  • University of Botswana: Advanced Social Science Research Methods, Proposal Writing and Presentation,  Environmental Sociology - 5 Months 

  • Namibia University of Science and Technology: Research Methodology - 5 Months


ELIGIBILITY

  • Students currently registered at, admitted to or who have obtained a degree (or equivalent) from one of the four TESIECS participating institutions namely: University of Johannesburg, University of the Western Cape, University of Zimbabwe, University of Botswana, and Namibia University of Science & Technology. 

  • Students of any other public university in Africa. Students in this category may apply to any of the five TESIECS institutions


Minimum Requirements 


  • Master’s degree programs: Second Class Upper (3.5 CGPA or its equivalent or at least 70% average in all modules) in the relevant fields of study from any recognized university in Africa. 

  • PhD degree programs: Master’s Degrees from any recognized university in Africa. 65% average or its equivalent in MA, M.Sc./M.Eng/M.Tech.



Application and Confirmation Process 

a) Complete the online mobility scholarship application; 

b) Select preferred university and programme (Programmes are available in degree and credit seeking mobilities); 

c) Submit/upload requested university application documentation; 

d) Get confirmation of receipt of both applications;

e) Institutions accept or reject application for admission; 

f) Successful candidates are informed of the outcome and award of scholarship

For PhD Applicants: A sample paper or article where you have been the main author or coauthor, preferably in the study area that you have selected. If you do not have a published article, please provide one that has been submitted for publication, or the draft of an article. At least two letters of recommendation sent by the referees directly to the TESIECS Coordinator UJ – at: tesiecs@uj.ac.za
